Ampthill Park "Car Parking Charging" feasibility study

Ampthill Park "Car Parking Charging" feasibility study

12 January 2021

Ampthill Town Council make the following statement in response to recent social media comments and petition in respect of possible car parking charges in Ampthill Park.  We aim to clarify the council’s position regarding parking within and around Ampthill Great Park.

The council is undertaking a car parking feasibility study with two main objectives.   The first being to resolve a shortfall in parking capacity at peak times within the park, which leads to additional parking pressure on roadside verges in Woburn Street and other unauthorised areas.

Secondly, the council also recognises that the entire cost of maintaining the Park falls on Ampthill residents as council tax payers.  Visitors to the park from outside of Ampthill, including those from surrounding towns and villages, do not currently pay towards maintaining this outstanding amenity.

The council plans to consult and liaise with other organisations to identify opportunities to increase parking capacity and to gauge the associated costs. The council’s main objective is to increase parking capacity and we will consider how this can be achieved efficiently and effectively whilst determining how proposals will be funded.

The small working group expect to submit recommendations to the council by summer 2021.
